Around the Sagrada Família you can add the Hospital de Sant Pau (about 10 minutes’ walk), Casa Milà and Casa Batlló (20–30 minutes) and Park Güell (a short bus or taxi ride). Walking times below are approximate, from the basilica entrance.
In short
- Hospital de Sant Pau: about 10 minutes along Avinguda de Gaudí.
- Casa Milà (La Pedrera): about 20–25 minutes, or metro L5 to Diagonal.
- Casa Batlló: about 25–30 minutes, or metro L2 to Passeig de Gràcia.
- Park Güell: about 15 minutes by bus or taxi.
1. Plaça de Gaudí
Right opposite the Nativity façade, a small park with a pond. Walk to the far side for the classic photo of the façade reflected in the water.
2. Avinguda de Gaudí
A pedestrian avenue that runs diagonally from the basilica to Sant Pau, lined with terraces and modernist lamp posts. Good for a coffee with a view of the towers, and calmer than the cafés facing the basilica.
3. Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau
About 10 minutes’ walk along Avinguda de Gaudí: a modernist hospital city of pavilions, mosaics and gardens by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, today a museum and UNESCO site. Often much quieter than the Gaudí sights.
4. Casa Milà (La Pedrera)
Gaudí’s wavy apartment building on Passeig de Gràcia, with its rooftop of warrior-like chimneys. About 20–25 minutes on foot, or metro L5 from Sagrada Família to Diagonal.
5. Casa Batlló
The “house of bones” with its dragon roof, a few blocks further down Passeig de Gràcia. About 25–30 minutes on foot, or metro L2 to Passeig de Gràcia.
6. Park Güell
Gaudí’s hillside park with the mosaic salamander and the serpentine bench. Walking is possible (about 40 minutes, uphill at the end), but a bus or taxi takes about 15 minutes. It needs its own timed ticket. Many visitors pair it with the Sagrada Família in a half-day tour with transport.
7. Torre Glòries and Plaça de les Glòries
The glowing bullet-shaped tower by Jean Nouvel, about 15–20 minutes’ walk south-east along Avinguda Diagonal, next to the Disseny Hub design museum and the Els Encants flea market.
8. Barcelona Cathedral (a different church)
Many visitors confuse the two. The Cathedral of Barcelona is a Gothic church in the old town, about 40 minutes’ walk or a short metro ride away. The Sagrada Família is a basilica, not the cathedral.
Eating near the Sagrada Família
The cafés and restaurants facing the basilica are convenient but pricey. Walk two or three blocks into the Eixample, or along Avinguda de Gaudí, for better value. You cannot bring food or drinks inside, so eat before your slot.
