You go in through the Nativity façade on Carrer de la Marina, cross the nave with its cool east windows on one side and warm west windows on the other, and leave by the Passion façade on Carrer de Sardenya. The museum is underground, and the two visitor towers start from the two façades.
In short
- In: Nativity façade, Carrer de la Marina. Out: Passion façade, Carrer de Sardenya.
- Blue and green windows on the east side, red and orange on the west.
- Museum below the church, included in every ticket.
- Glory façade (Carrer de Mallorca): still being built.
1. Nativity façade (entrance)
The façade Gaudí saw built, facing the sunrise on Carrer de la Marina. Individual visitors go in here after the security check. Look for the Tree of Life and the three portals of Hope, Charity and Faith.
2. The nave, a forest of columns
Five aisles under a vault 45 m high in the centre. The columns lean and branch like trees, so the building needs no flying buttresses. Stand in the middle and look straight up.
3. East windows: blue and green
On the Nativity side the glass is cool: blues and greens for birth and new life. It glows in the morning sun.
4. West windows: red and orange
On the Passion side the glass is warm: reds, oranges and yellows. On a sunny afternoon it throws colour across the columns, the moment most photos show.
5. Crossing and the evangelists
Four thick columns hold up the central towers. Each carries the glowing symbol of an evangelist: man, lion, ox, eagle. Above them rises the tower of Jesus Christ, 172.5 m.
6. Apse, altar and canopy
The altar sits under a canopy hung with lamps and grapes, with Christ on the cross below it and the organ behind. The tower of the Virgin Mary, crowned by a star, rises above the apse.
7. Passion façade (exit)
Facing the sunset on Carrer de Sardenya: bare, angular sculptures by Josep Maria Subirachs tell the last days of Jesus, under bone-like leaning columns. Step back into the square to see it whole.
8. Museum (below the church)
Included in every ticket and easy to miss: Gaudí’s plaster models, drawings, the hanging-chain model and a window looking down into the crypt where he is buried.
9. The two visitor towers
With a tower ticket (€36) you go up one: the Nativity tower towards the sea or the Passion tower over the city. Lift up, stairs down; not for children under 6.
10. Glory façade (under construction)
The future main entrance, on Carrer de Mallorca, will be the largest façade. It is still being built, which is why you will see cranes on this side.
Schematic plan, not to scale. The museum and the crypt are underground; the crypt is not part of the tourist visit.
Your route, step by step

- The nave. Walk to the centre and look up; then walk along each side to see the windows close up.

- Your tower, if you booked one, at the time on your ticket: Nativity tower from the entrance side, Passion tower from the exit side.
- The museum, down the stairs as you head out. Don’t skip it.
- The Passion façade, from the square outside: step back to see the whole sculpture group.
