The Sagrada Família is a working church, so the dress code is simple: shorts and skirts at least to mid-thigh, nothing see-through, no swimwear and no bare feet, and covered shoulders in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament (official rules, checked November 2026). Bags go through a security check, and there are no lockers for luggage.
In short
- Dress: no see-through clothing, no swimwear, no bare feet; trousers and skirts at least to mid-thigh; bare shoulders not allowed in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.
- Hats: no hats in the nave or the museum, except for religious or health reasons.
- Bags: all bags are checked at the entrance and there are no lockers for suitcases; the basilica advises against bringing rucksacks.
- Security: metal detectors at the entrance; no food, no drinks from outside, no smoking.
What to wear
| Wear | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Shorts, skirts or dresses that reach mid-thigh | Swimwear, very short shorts, see-through clothes |
| Any top, with a light scarf or shirt for your shoulders | Going barefoot or in beach flip-flops straight from the sand |
| Comfortable shoes (a tower means a long staircase down) | Hats inside the nave and the museum |
Staff can refuse entry, and a timed ticket does not wait while you go and change. In summer, a thin scarf in your bag solves the shoulders question for the one chapel where it matters.
Bags, luggage and security
Everyone goes through metal detectors and a bag check. The official rules are clear on three points:
- No lockers for suitcases. If you are coming from the airport or after checking out of your hotel, leave luggage at a left-luggage shop first.
- Rucksacks are discouraged. A small bag or a light daypack is fine.
- Lockers only for towers. bag lockers are provided only for the tower climb.
No food, no drinks from outside, no smoking. Tripods are not allowed.
Children
under 16s must be with an adult; under 3s need no ticket. For the towers, children under 6 cannot go up the towers; from 6 to 16 they must be with an adult. Pushchairs are fine in the basilica, which is step-free, but not in the towers.
Accessibility
the whole basilica is accessible except the towers; wheelchairs on loan at entrance B on Carrer de la Marina, subject to availability. Ask for help at entrance B on Carrer de la Marina. People with disabilities go free, with one free companion on the basic ticket.
Behaviour inside
- Quiet hour, 9:00–10:00: every day from 9:00 to 10:00 (since 2 February 2026): earphones required and silence inside.
- Keep your voice down at all times: Mass is held in the basilica and the crypt.
- No running, no gathering in groups that block the way.
