The best time to visit the Sagrada Família is a sunny afternoon, about two hours before closing, when the low sun pours through the red and orange windows on the west side. For calm, take the first slot at 9:00, which since February 2026 is a quiet hour. The quietest months are November to February, on weekdays.
In short
- Colour: sunny afternoon, west windows. Calm: 9:00, quiet hour.
- Morning light is cool blue and green; afternoon light is warm red, orange and gold.
- A cloudy day dims the windows whatever the hour.
- Book the slot you want early: the late-afternoon ones sell out first.
Why the hour matters: the colour clock
The windows were designed by Joan Vila-Grau, commissioned in 1999 to follow Gaudí’s guidelines; the work took nearly 20 years. Their colours follow the sun: cool blues and greens on the east (Nativity) side, lit by the morning sun; warm yellows, oranges and reds on the west (Passion) side, lit in the afternoon. Drag the sun to see the difference with our own photos.
Morning: the sun rises behind the Nativity façade and lights the east windows in blues and greens.
Morning or afternoon?
| Morning (9:00–12:00) | Afternoon (last 2–3 hours) | |
|---|---|---|
| Light inside | Cool blues and greens, east side | Warm reds, oranges and gold, west side |
| Crowds | Calmest at 9:00 (quiet hour) | Busy, but slots are spread out |
| Photos | Soft, even light | The famous coloured columns |
| Façades outside | Sun on the Nativity façade (east) | Sun on the Passion façade (west) |
Our pick for a first visit is the afternoon on a clear day. For a second visit, or if you hate crowds, the 9:00 slot.
Best months and days
- November to February: fewest visitors, shortest days. Afternoon light comes early, so a 15:00–16:00 slot already gets low sun.
- March to May and September to October: pleasant and busy. Book a week or more ahead.
- June to August: the busiest months; the longest opening hours (until 20:00 on weekdays) give you more late slots.
- Weekdays beat weekends, and Saturdays close at 18:00 all year.
Full hours for each month are on the opening hours page.
Arriving for your slot
Be at the entrance on Carrer de la Marina 15–20 minutes before your time: your ticket is valid only for the time you chose; if you arrive late you cannot go in. The security check takes a few minutes at busy hours.

Questions people ask
What is the best time of day to see the Sagrada Família stained glass?
On a sunny afternoon, about two hours before closing, when the low sun lights the red and orange windows on the west side. In the morning the blue and green east windows glow instead.
When is the Sagrada Família least crowded?
At the first slot, 9:00, which since February 2026 is also a quiet hour, and on weekdays from November to February. Weekends and spring to autumn are the busiest.
Is the Sagrada Família better in the morning or afternoon?
Morning for calm and cool blue-green light, afternoon for the warm colours most photos show. A sunny day matters more than the hour.
